Avalanche Fall 6-3 to Maple Leafs Despite Two-Goal Performance from Nathan MacKinnon.

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche suffered a 6-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night despite a two-goal performance from Nathan MacKinnon. Colorado held multiple leads throughout the contest but struggled to contain Toronto's offense in the closing minutes of the second period. William Nylander led the Maple Leafs with two goals and three assists, matching his career high with five points. Auston Matthews added two goals and two assists, helping Toronto secure the road victory. Brock Nelson also scored for Colorado, while goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 16 saves.
Toronto opened the scoring just 3:03 into the first period when Nick Blankenburg gave the Maple Leafs an early advantage. MacKinnon responded midway through the period, driving through Toronto's defense to tie the game. He scored again at 15:14, putting Colorado ahead 2-1. The Maple Leafs answered early in the second period when Nylander converted a power-play opportunity following a high-sticking penalty against Jaden Schwartz. The goal marked the first time Colorado had allowed a power-play goal this season. Nelson later regained the lead for the Avalanche, scoring off his own rebound to make it 3-2.
However, Toronto shifted the momentum late in the second period. Nylander scored his second goal at 16:47 to tie the game before Easton Cowan connected on a one-timer just 46 seconds later, giving the Maple Leafs a 4-3 advantage heading into the final period.
Colorado struggled to regain control in the third period as Matthews extended Toronto's lead with a power-play goal midway through the frame. He later added an empty-net goal in the final minute to secure the 6-3 victory.
Special teams proved to be a significant challenge for the Avalanche. Colorado finished 0-for-5 on the power play, including a brief five-on-three opportunity early in the second period. Toronto goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves, preventing the Avalanche from mounting a comeback. The loss marked Colorado's first defeat in three home games and Blackwood's first setback of the season. Despite strong individual performances from MacKinnon and Nelson, the Avalanche were unable to maintain their offensive momentum against Toronto. Colorado was also without forward Logan O'Connor, who remained away from the team following the sudden passing of his father, former NHL defenseman Myles O'Connor. The Avalanche will look to bounce back Tuesday night when they travel to face the Dallas Stars. Meanwhile, Toronto will conclude its three-game road trip against Utah.
