Aztecs’ Winning Streak Ends at Grand Canyon.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (17-4, 11-1) saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end with a 57-44 loss at Grand Canyon University (6-13, 8-5) on Wednesday evening. The defeat marked San Diego State’s first loss to a Mountain West opponent since February of last year, ending a 19-game streak, and was also their first road loss of the season. The Aztecs struggled offensively, shooting just 30% from the field, making only two three-pointers, and committing 19 turnovers. Despite the difficulties, the game was tied with 8:30 remaining before Grand Canyon went on a decisive 22-9 run to secure the victory. “GCU was the better team tonight. They outplayed us in all areas,” said SDSU head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. “It looked like we were playing in slow motion, and it’s very uncharacteristic for us to turn it over 19 times. We just didn’t do enough to win.”

Naomi Panganiban led the Aztecs with 15 points and was perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-for-6. She has missed only one free throw in Mountain West play and is 21-for-21 over the last three games. San Diego State’s offense struggled early, missing five of their first six shots and turning the ball over four times in the first five minutes, falling behind 11-4. The Aztecs, however, limited the ‘Lopes to just three field goals in the second quarter and 21 points in the first half.

SDSU briefly took the lead in the third quarter, holding a four-point advantage with 2:58 remaining in the period. The score was tied at the end of the third quarter, but Grand Canyon’s clutch shooting and rebounding in the fourth led to a 13-1 run that sealed the win. Chloe Mann led Grand Canyon with 18 points. Stat of the Game: San Diego State committed 19 turnovers while recording six assists. SDSU’s 19-game winning streak against Mountain West opponents was a school record and the fifth-longest in conference history.

Up Next: The Aztecs will face San Jose State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
