Bay FC secured a 2–1 victory over Denver Summit FC on Saturday night in a landmark match that marked the debut of Summit FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. The contest, played in Denver’s home opener, featured early drama, a first-ever club goal, and a decisive first-half swing after a red card shifted momentum. Denver Summit FC entered the league stage for the first time with several players making their NWSL debuts, including Tash Flint, Eva Gaetino, Melissa Kössler, Devin Lynch, Ayo Oke, and Emma Regan. The starting XI also featured Abby Smith in goal and Janine Sonis wearing the captain’s armband.
Bay FC struck first in the 8th minute when Alex Pfeiffer finished a chance to put the visitors ahead 1–0. The goal marked her second career NWSL score, with both of her league goals coming in season openers. Denver responded in the 25th minute with a milestone moment for the new club. Captain Janine Sonis set up Melissa Kössler, who converted to score the first NWSL goal in Summit FC history, leveling the match at 1–1. The momentum shifted almost immediately after the equalizer. Just moments later in the same minute, Sonis was shown a red card, reducing Denver to 10 players for the remainder of the match. Kaleigh Kurtz then took over captaincy duties. Bay FC capitalized on the numerical advantage quickly. In the 31st minute, Joelle Anderson restored the lead, finishing a move that made it 2–1 heading into halftime.
Denver adjusted at the break, introducing Olivia Thomas for Emma Regan, marking Thomas’s professional debut. Further substitutions followed in the second half, with Yuna McCormack coming on for Ally Brazier in the 63rd minute and Natalie Means making her league debut in the 70th minute, replacing Carson Pickett. Despite being down a player, Denver remained competitive. Goalkeeper Abby Smith delivered a strong performance with five saves, keeping the match within reach as Bay FC controlled more of the possession and tempo. In the end, Bay FC held on for the win, earning a notable early-season result and their first NWSL victory since June 2025, while Denver Summit FC’s historic debut ended in a narrow defeat but included a first-ever club goal and several encouraging individual performances.
