CLEVELAND — Rookie Travis Bazzana delivered a key two-run double during Cleveland’s explosive third inning, while Joey Cantillo turned in six shutout frames to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Cantillo continued his strong early-season form, improving to 3-1 after allowing five hits and one walk while striking out four across six scoreless innings. The left-hander kept the Angels off balance throughout the night and gave Cleveland another steady outing from its rotation. The Guardians struck first in the second inning after Angels opener Brent Suter exited the game. Brayan Rocchio greeted reliever Jose Fermin with an RBI single that brought home two runs and gave Cleveland an early 2-0 advantage. Cleveland broke the game open an inning later with a five-run surge fueled by patience at the plate and shaky Angels pitching. The Guardians drew four walks in the inning, including a bases-loaded free pass by David Fry. Daniel Schneemann followed with a two-run single before Bazzana, the top overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, ripped a two-run double into center field to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Kyle Manzardo and Fry each collected two hits for Cleveland, which finished with a season-high 10 walks. Rhys Hoskins reached base frequently, drawing three walks on the night.
The loss continued a long stretch of struggles for the Angels in Cleveland. The Guardians improved to 28-4 at home against Los Angeles since the start of the 2014 season, while the Angels dropped their 16th game in the last 21 contests.
Suter fell to 1-2 after allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Despite issuing five walks, Alek Manoah provided some relief for Los Angeles by tossing five scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Jo Adell drove in a run with an eighth-inning single, and both Adell and Nolan Schanuel recorded two hits for the Angels. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt missed his second consecutive game because of a viral infection, with bench coach Tony Arnerich again serving as acting manager. Vogt is expected to return for Tuesday’s game. The series continues Tuesday as Angels rookie right-hander Walbert Urena (1-3, 3.22 ERA) is scheduled to face Cleveland’s Slade Cecconi (2-4, 6.15 ERA).
