Bears Put Up 59 Points as Caleb Williams Leads Chicago Past Carolina in Record-Setting Opener.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears opened the 2026 season with an offensive explosion Sunday, racing past the Carolina Panthers 59-37 in a game that set a new NFL record for the highest-scoring season opener. The 96 combined points surpassed the previous mark of 88, established when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the New Orleans Saints 48-40 in 2018. Williams delivered a spectacular performance in his first game of the season, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. He appeared especially sharp early, throwing for 196 yards in the first half and connecting with Cole Kmet on a precise 22-yard touchdown pass. Williams also found the end zone twice with his legs before halftime as Chicago carried a 31-24 advantage into the break. The Bears continued to pour it on after halftime, fueled by a dominant performance from D'Andre Swift. Just days after agreeing to a three-year, $33.75 million contract extension, Swift rushed for 124 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns. Rookie running back Kyle Monangai added another big-play element to Chicago's ground attack. He finished with 100 rushing yards, highlighted by a 61-yard touchdown run that pushed the Bears' lead to 45-31. Chicago's 59 points also established a new franchise record for points in a season opener, surpassing the previous mark of 45 set against Green Bay in 1948. The total was the fourth-highest scoring output in Bears history, trailing only the franchise's most famous offensive performances, including the 73-0 victory over Washington in the 1940 NFL championship game. Carolina kept pace for much of the first half behind Bryce Young, who finished with 361 passing yards and three touchdown passes while adding a rushing touchdown.
Young threw for 193 yards and two scores before halftime, including a 51-yard completion to Jalen Coker. Coker finished the afternoon with a career-best eight receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers briefly pulled even at 31-31 after Chuba Hubbard scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, but Chicago quickly regained control. A late-hit penalty against Carolina defensive lineman Derrick Brown extended a Bears drive, and Swift converted the opportunity with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Panthers then failed to convert a fourth-down attempt near midfield. Young's deep pass toward Tetairoa McMillan fell incomplete, and Chicago immediately capitalized when Monangai broke free for his 61-yard touchdown. Carolina's problems continued on its next possession when McMillan lost a fumble. Williams took advantage again, finding a wide-open Jahdea Walker for a touchdown that extended Chicago's advantage to 52-31 with 6:27 remaining. The Bears added another touchdown late to reach 59 points and put the game out of reach. Chicago will return home next Sunday to face the Minnesota Vikings. The Panthers will try to bounce back on the road against the Atlanta Falcons.
