DENVER — A sixth-inning surge powered the New York Mets past the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Monday, as Carson Benge’s leadoff home run sparked a decisive rally and Mark Vientos delivered key late-inning production in a game moved up three hours due to an unfavorable weather forecast. Benge broke a scoreless deadlock by becoming the first Mets batter to record a hit off Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano, launching a solo homer to right-center to open the sixth inning. The Mets quickly built on the momentum, stringing together four hits in the frame after Sugano’s strong start unraveled. Francisco Álvarez and Luis Torrens followed with back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 2-0. Sugano, who had been perfect through five innings while working efficiently on just 48 pitches, exited after walking Juan Soto and inducing a Bo Bichette groundout that left runners in scoring position. Vientos extended the rally with a two-out, two-run single off reliever Jaden Hill, continuing his hot streak after hitting two home runs in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Angels. On the mound, Denver native David Peterson earned the win in relief for New York, working four innings while allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Craig Kimbrel handled the eighth inning scorelessly, and Devin Williams closed out the ninth for his fourth save.
The Rockies showed late life in the seventh, scoring twice on an RBI triple from Jordan Beck and an RBI single by Kyle Karros. Mickey Moniak kept Colorado within reach with a 17-game hitting streak intact, collecting two hits and later adding a one-out triple in the eighth, though he was stranded. Colorado has now lost five straight and six of its last seven, a slide following a series sweep of the Mets in New York last month. The Mets improved to 3-1 on their nine-game road trip after dropping 17 of their previous 20 games overall. Looking ahead, New York is scheduled to send Freddy Peralta to the mound against Colorado’s Michael Lorenzen in Tuesday night’s matchup.
