DENVER — The Colorado Rockies held off the Texas Rangers 7–6 on Monday night after Rangers starter MacKenzie Gore left the game following just one inning due to injury, disrupting Texas’ pitching plans early. Gore (3–4) ran into immediate trouble in the first inning, giving up a leadoff double to Willi Castro before Brenton Doyle and T.J. Rumfield worked consecutive walks to load the bases. Ezequiel Tovar followed with a two-run double, putting Colorado ahead early. The inning grew more tense when Jake McCarthy hit a swinging bunt that Gore charged, diving to field it and reloading the bases on the play. After striking out Kyle Karros and getting Sterlin Thompson to ground out, Gore exited the game to begin the second inning, with Peyton Gray taking over on the mound. Colorado starter José Quintana (2–2) settled in after early damage, allowing three runs on seven hits across 5 2/3 innings while working with a lead for most of his outing. The Rockies extended their advantage in the third inning when Karros reached on a throwing error by Texas third baseman Josh Jung, allowing two runs to score. Gray later surrendered two more runs in the fourth, keeping Colorado in control. Texas clawed back behind a strong performance from rookie Justin Foscue, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. He collected two doubles and added a solo home run off Quintana in the fifth inning. Ezequiel Duran also contributed with a 3-for-4 night, scoring twice.
The Rangers made things interesting late. In the eighth, Victor Vodnik entered with a 7–3 lead but failed to record an out, allowing a Josh Jung double and two walks before being pulled. Brennan Bernardino then surrendered a two-run single to Duran and an RBI groundout, trimming the margin to one run. Colorado closer Juan Mejía worked through a tense ninth inning, allowing a two-out single to Jake Burger before securing his third save in as many chances and extending his streak of scoreless appearances to six. The win improved Colorado’s home record to 10–13 and continued its recent success against Texas at Coors Field. The Rockies have not yet announced their starter for Tuesday’s matchup against Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker (1–4, 4.34 ERA).
