In Week 17 of the NFL season, the Cleveland Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 13–6, spoiling Pittsburgh’s chance to clinch the AFC North title. The loss forced the Steelers into a winner-take-all Week 18 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens to decide the division.
The game marked quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ second career victory as a starter for Cleveland, with his first coming earlier in the season against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 23. Facing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a divisional rival, Sanders completed 17 of 23 passes for 186 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions.
Sanders’ lone touchdown came in the opening quarter, helping the Browns build an early 10–0 lead. After the game, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski praised the young quarterback’s resilience and growth. “He got a win, so that’s great for the young man,” Stefanski said. “Beating Pittsburgh, a division rival, is never easy. I’m proud of how he battled. There are things he can improve, but that comes with experience.”
The first interception occurred in the second quarter when Steelers rookie Jack Sawyer made the play after Sanders’ pass was tipped while he was under pressure. Stefanski noted that the second interception, thrown in the fourth quarter, would be used as a learning moment for the rookie. This season, Sanders has struggled with ball security, recording seven touchdown passes compared to ten interceptions. Despite those challenges, Cleveland managed to secure a crucial AFC North victory.
As the season winds down, Sanders will look to improve his decision-making and consistency as he aims to solidify his role as the Browns’ starting quarterback moving forward into the 2026 season.
