In a dominant performance on Friday night, Corbin Burnes struck out a season-high ten batters over six shutout innings, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The win marked Arizona’s first set of back-to-back wins since early May, offering a promising sign of momentum for the struggling team. Burnes (3-1) allowed only two hits and three walks while working through six efficient innings. This was his second consecutive scoreless start after sitting out a turn in the rotation due to shoulder inflammation. His poise on the mound helped the Diamondbacks contain Colorado’s offense with ease. One of the most pivotal moments came in the fourth inning when Burnes struck out Mickey Moniak with the bases loaded, halting what could have been Colorado’s best chance to score. Offensively, the Diamondbacks spread the production around. Eugenio Suárez and Geraldo Perdomo each drove in three runs. Gabriel Moreno reached base four times with two doubles, a single, and a walk. Corbin Carroll, Josh Naylor, and Randal Grichuk each added two hits, fueling an attack that chipped away at Colorado’s pitching throughout the game. For the Rockies, Friday marked another chapter in a historically bad start. With the loss, Colorado fell to 7-37, the worst 44-game start in Major League Baseball since 1901. The team is now just 2-21 on the road and 1-21 in night games. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer, who took over after Bud Black was fired last weekend, is still looking for his first win.
The Rockies gave the ball to 24-year-old lefty Carson Palmquist, making his major league debut. Ranked as the team’s No. 8 prospect by MLB.com, Palmquist allowed five runs over four innings. While the young pitcher showed promise, he couldn’t overcome the seasoned Arizona lineup. The Diamondbacks added two runs in the second, one in the third, and two more in the fourth before tacking on additional runs in the seventh. Their balanced offense and Burnes’s sharp outing proved too much for Colorado, who managed just two hits all night. Arizona will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday when Zac Gallen (3-5, 4.59 ERA) takes the mound. Colorado counters with Germán Márquez (1-6, 8.27 ERA), hoping to snap a brutal skid.
While the Rockies continue to search for answers, the Diamondbacks hope this series could be the spark they need to climb back into contention in the National League West.
