The victory of Colorado Rapids over Austin FC was sealed with a resounding 2-0 triumph on Saturday evening. In the ongoing 2024 season, midfielder Cole Bassett and forward Rafael Navarro showcased their exceptional skills once again, making significant contributions to the scoreline and ensuring Colorado's victory.
The match commenced with a competitive exchange of possession, where Austin initially dominated. However, Colorado, renowned for their proficiency in counterattacks this season, capitalized on turnovers to create numerous scoring opportunities despite conceding possession.
The breakthrough occurred when midfielder Connor Ronan's cross found its way to Omir Fernandez, whose deflected pass set up Cole Bassett for a precise curling shot into the top right corner, giving the Rapids the lead.
This goal marked Bassett's sixth of the season, matching his personal best for a single MLS season, previously achieved in 2023. At just 22 years old, Bassett also achieved a milestone in the Rapids' history by becoming the youngest player to score 25 career goals for the club, surpassing Wolde Harris, who accomplished this feat at 25 years old in 1999.
Colorado maintained their lead through solid defensive efforts led by goalkeeper Zack Steffen, limiting Austin to minimal scoring opportunities throughout the first half.
In the second half, the Rapids further extended their advantage shortly after the restart, as debutant defender Jackson Travis's cross resulted in Rafael Navarro scoring his 10th goal of the season with a powerful volley.
Following Navarro's goal, Colorado continued to control the game, with their defensive unit effectively neutralizing Austin's attacking threats, allowing them only one shot on target for the entire match.
