Christian McCaffrey, a standout player for the San Francisco 49ers, exited the team's 35-10 defeat against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night due to a knee injury, which appears to be more severe than initially thought. According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, McCaffrey is suspected to have sustained a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, raising concerns that his season may be in jeopardy. Shanahan remarked, "I think PCL injuries typically require a couple of weeks for recovery, but I am not entirely certain at this point."

In the early stages of the game against the Bills, McCaffrey was integral to the 49ers' strategy. Amidst the snowfall at Highmark Stadium, he carried the ball seven times and was targeted three times in the passing game, accumulating 53 rushing yards and two receptions for 14 yards before leaving the field. This injury represents a significant setback for a team already plagued by injuries on both sides of the ball, with the adverse weather conditions further complicating matters for San Francisco. Quarterback Brock Purdy managed only 94 passing yards on 18 attempts.

Purdy expressed the impact of McCaffrey's absence, stating, "He’s one of the best running backs in the league. Losing him affects how we execute certain aspects of our offense." Shanahan noted that McCaffrey appeared to have injured himself following an 18-yard run in the second quarter, going down shortly thereafter. "It seemed like he just got shoe-stringed; he was on the verge of making a significant play," Shanahan commented. "It was frustrating. He had an excellent week of practice, and I could sense his urgency. He looked great coming into the game." McCaffrey has faced challenges this season, having missed the first eight games due to Achilles tendinitis.
