Colorado’s Top Cornerback DJ McKinney Plans Transfer Portal Entry.

Colorado cornerback DJ McKinney is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Friday, according to a report from On3’s Hayes Fawcett. The move comes after a disappointing 2025 season for McKinney, following a strong 2024 campaign in which he lined up opposite Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. McKinney transferred to Colorado from Oklahoma State and was projected to be the Buffaloes’ leading cornerback in 2025. However, his performance declined compared to the previous season. Because of that regression, many close to the program viewed him as a likely transfer candidate, a belief that now appears to be confirmed. Had McKinney built on his 2024 success, an NFL opportunity may have been within reach. Instead, he will look to reestablish his draft stock elsewhere. He concludes his time at Colorado with 97 total tackles, 14 pass deflections, four interceptions, one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble.

With McKinney’s departure, head coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes face a major need at cornerback. Carter Stoutmire, who primarily plays safety, is currently the only returning defensive back with significant experience at the position.
