GOLDEN, Colo. – In a game that stretched across seven hours due to four separate lightning delays, the Colorado School of Mines football team powered past Washburn with a 41-27 victory Saturday afternoon at Marv Kay Stadium. The Orediggers (2-0) wasted no time asserting themselves, firing on all cylinders on both sides of the ball. By halftime, Mines had built a commanding 27-7 lead, fueled by a relentless ground attack that produced 20 points in the second quarter alone. The defense matched the intensity, forcing Washburn into quick throws and an uncomfortable rhythm that kept the Ichabods off balance early. But the unusual circumstances of the game provided Washburn with opportunities to regroup. With kickoff at noon and the final whistle not sounding until nearly 7 p.m., both teams endured long stretches of waiting in the locker rooms. When play resumed in the second half, Washburn found more success offensively, managing to close the gap and put points on the board.

Still, Mines’ offense proved too much. The Orediggers added 14 points after halftime to keep their cushion intact and ensure the Ichabods never threatened to steal momentum. By the fourth quarter, Mines held a comfortable lead that carried them to the final buzzer.

The victory not only showcased Mines’ balanced attack but also marked one of the more unusual games in program history, given its marathon duration. Now sitting at 2-0, the Orediggers will look to carry that momentum into another home matchup this coming weekend.
