The Washington Commanders appear unlikely to start Marcus Mariota at quarterback in their Week 18 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mariota suffered injuries to his hand and quadriceps during Washington’s Week 16 loss to Philadelphia and was unable to play in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys. Head coach Dan Quinn explained that swelling in Mariota’s throwing hand, combined with the short turnaround between games, made it unrealistic for him to be ready in time for the Dallas game. Because Washington played on Thursday, the team gained additional recovery time ahead of the regular-season finale. However, Quinn indicated on Monday that Mariota still was not able to fully participate, even in a light walkthrough. “He wasn’t ready today,” Quinn said, noting that Mariota has not yet reached a point where he can cut, stop, and move at full speed. Quinn added that he hopes to have more clarity later in the week but acknowledged that Mariota remains questionable.
Based on Quinn’s comments, Josh Johnson is expected to make his second straight start at quarterback. Quinn said the team would “lean and start with Josh again” if Mariota is unable to play. The coaching staff is still evaluating backup options, including Sam Hartman and Jeff Driskel.
While Mariota may not receive medical clearance, some have speculated whether Washington is also being cautious for strategic reasons. The Commanders currently hold the No. 7 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and a loss in Week 18 could improve their draft position if other results fall their way. Though teams rarely acknowledge such considerations publicly, they are often part of late-season discussions.
