The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that cornerback Trevon Diggs has been released from the team. Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, has been placed on waivers. If he is not claimed, he will be free to sign with any NFL team. According to ESPN, any team that claims Diggs would be responsible for paying the remaining $472,000 of his base salary for Week 18, along with an additional $58,823 if he is active. Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension before the 2023 season, but the deal no longer contains guaranteed money after this year, despite technically running through 2028. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reported that Diggs’ release resulted from several issues both on and off the field. DLLS Sports reporter Clarence Hill Jr. added that Diggs requested permission to remain in the Washington, D.C. area following Dallas’ Week 17 game against the Washington Commanders. Although the team denied the request, Diggs stayed behind anyway, a move Jones described as highly unusual without a legitimate hardship.
Diggs appeared in eight games this season, recording 25 tackles while failing to register an interception or pass breakup.
He initially played in the first six games before suffering a concussion caused by an accident at his home. After re-aggravating a knee injury, the Cowboys placed him on injured reserve, though he returned in Week 16. Tension between Diggs and the organization became more apparent earlier in the month when the two sides disagreed about his readiness to return from injured reserve. Diggs believed he was healthy enough to play in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings but was ultimately held out. Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones publicly stated that Diggs’ practice performance and health did not meet the team’s standards at the time. Despite those concerns, Diggs was activated for the Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers and played every defensive snap in Dallas’ Christmas victory over Washington. Shortly after, the team opted to move on from the veteran cornerback.
Diggs earned First Team All-Pro honors in 2021 after leading the NFL with 11 interceptions. Over 66 career games, he totaled 240 tackles, 63 passes defended, and 20 interceptions. He is also the younger brother of New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
