D.J. Jones Believes Broncos Have the Pieces to Break NFL Sack Record.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Confidence continues to build inside the Denver Broncos’ locker room as the defense sets its sights on one of the NFL’s most historic records. Defensive tackle D.J. Jones became the latest Broncos player to express belief that Denver can surpass the Chicago Bears’ single-season sack record of 72, a mark that has stood since the 1984 season. After Wednesday’s training camp practice at Broncos Park, Jones said the Broncos’ defensive front has the talent and determination needed to reach the milestone. “We can break the record,” Jones said. Denver finished the 2025 season with 68 sacks, narrowly missing the Bears’ record by four. Earlier this offseason, defensive lineman Zach Allen also expressed confidence that the Broncos could challenge the mark. Jones believes the team’s returning defensive core, along with its added depth, gives Denver a legitimate opportunity. “We got what it takes,” Jones said. “We’ve tasted it. Now it’s time to cook the meal, eat it and take a break. We got the numbers. We got the men. We got the willpower. We got free will to go do it. So it’s up to us and we’re going to do it.” The pursuit of the record has brought comparisons to the legendary 1984 Bears defense, which featured Hall of Fame defensive linemen Richard Dent and Dan Hampton. Hampton acknowledged that Denver has the ability to reach the mark but noted that several factors must come together. “Every golfer thinks they can shoot 59,” Hampton said. “It’s certainly possible to break our record. Lots has to go right. We will see.” The Broncos’ pass rush was one of the team’s biggest strengths last season. Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto led the team with 14 sacks, while Jonathon Cooper recorded eight. John Franklin-Myers added 7.5 sacks before departing in free agency, and Allen finished with seven. Despite losing Franklin-Myers, Jones believes Denver’s defensive line remains strong. “It didn’t matter who we lost,” Jones said. “We still have our core group.” One player expected to receive a larger opportunity is defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike, who recorded 3.5 sacks in a rotational role last season.

Jones believes Uwazurike has the ability to become a major contributor.

“He can’t be blocked,” Jones said. “He’s a man, he’s a grown man. He’s scary.”
