Dak Prescott is set to miss the rest of the 2024 season due to a serious hamstring injury that requires surgery. The injury, initially thought to be less severe, involved a partial avulsion, where a tendon detached from the bone. Prescott’s surgery is scheduled for November 13, and the recovery is expected to keep him sidelined until the 2025 season. Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush will likely start in Prescott's absence as Dallas aims to adjust for the remainder of the season. However Dak Prescott’s current contract with the Dallas Cowboys, signed in September 2024, is a four-year extension worth $240 million. This deal averages $60 million annually, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history by annual value, surpassing other high-profile quarterbacks. The contract includes $231 million in guaranteed money, extending Prescott’s tenure with the Cowboys until 2028, when he’ll be 35 years old.

This agreement builds on his previous 2021 contract, valued at $160 million over four years, and provides a clear indication of the Cowboys’ commitment to Prescott as their long-term quarterback Dak Prescott's future with the Dallas Cowboys remains uncertain as his contract approaches its 2025 expiration. The Cowboys chose not to renegotiate his contract for an early extension in 2024, leaving his potential for free agency open. This decision reflects owner Jerry Jones' willingness to let Prescott’s situation play out rather than rush into a long-term commitment, especially with the NFL quarterback market reaching record-high salaries.Prescott himself has expressed confidence that a deal with the Cowboys could still happen, but the team appears content to wait and see how both his performance and market interest develop as he enters his contract's final season. If no extension is agreed upon by 2025, Prescott could enter free agency for the first time, where he would have leverage to negotiate with other teams if the Cowboys do not meet his market value.
