Eugenio Suárez etched his name into baseball history Friday night, launching two home runs to become just the third Venezuelan-born player to reach 300 career homers, as the Arizona Diamondbacks outslugged the Colorado Rockies 14-8 at Coors Field. Suárez’s milestone night highlighted a relentless offensive performance by the Diamondbacks, who recorded a season-high 21 hits en route to their third win in four games. The 32-year-old third baseman went 4-for-5, with homers in the fifth and sixth innings, giving him 24 home runs and an MLB-leading 65 RBIs on the season.
“It’s a blessing to reach this number,” Suárez said after the game. “To be mentioned with Miguel Cabrera and Andrés Galarraga — it means a lot to me and to my country.”
Arizona’s bats wasted no time jumping on Rockies starter Austin Gomber, who was making his first home start of the season after recovering from a shoulder injury. The Diamondbacks tagged Gomber (0-1) for nine runs and 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings, turning Coors Field into a launchpad. Ketel Marte powered the early scoring surge, driving in five runs with a three-run homer in the third and a two-run double in the fifth. Ildemaro Vargas, starting at second base, finished just a triple shy of the cycle and clubbed his first home run of the season.
Despite the offensive explosion, the game wasn’t without drama. Arizona starter Zac Gallen (5-8) struggled through five shaky innings, surrendering seven runs, including a six-run fourth where Colorado sent 10 batters to the plate. The Rockies briefly grabbed a 7-6 lead after homers by Ryan McMahon and Mickey Moniak, and a two-run double by Hunter Goodman. Suárez quickly flipped the momentum with his second blast of the night — a towering shot in the sixth inning that pushed Arizona’s lead to 11-7 and effectively put the game out of reach.
“He’s been our rock in the middle of the order,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “Tonight was special, and we’re all thrilled for him.”
The Rockies have now hit seven home runs off Gallen in two starts this season — a surprising stat given he had only allowed two homers in his previous 15 outings against Colorado. With the win, Arizona improves to [insert record], while Colorado drops to [insert record. The Diamondbacks will send Merrill Kelly (6-3, 3.41 ERA) to the mound Saturday in the second game of the series. The Rockies will counter with Carson Palmquist (0-4, 7.76 ERA), who is still searching for his first major league win.
