The San Francisco 49ers made headlines this offseason by extending contracts for some of their most important players. Among these standout signings was linebacker Fred Warner, who inked a three-year, $63 million extension, making him the highest-paid off-ball linebacker in NFL history. The deal includes $56.7 million in guaranteed money and an average annual value (AAV) of $21 million, surpassing the previous record held by Baltimore Ravens’ Roquan Smith. Warner, a cornerstone of the 49ers’ elite defense, has consistently demonstrated leadership, toughness, and versatility throughout his career. Since entering the league, Warner has recorded at least 118 combined tackles each season. He has been named a First Team All-Pro four times and has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last three years. In 2023, he posted arguably his best season yet, notching 132 tackles, four interceptions, 11 passes defensed, and four forced fumbles—all while playing through a fractured ankle sustained in Week 4

.

General Manager John Lynch praised Warner’s character and impact on the team, stating, “Fred sets the tone for our entire team with the consistency, speed and physicality with which he plays. Off the field, his passion, energy, and professionalism are second to none”. His leadership and durability have earned him not only accolades but the trust of the 49ers' front office as a franchise cornerstone. This extension follows similar long-term deals for tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy, indicating that San Francisco is committed to retaining the core of its team that reached Super Bowl LVIII. The front office’s aggressive approach to keeping top talent reflects a win-now mindset, one that views players like Warner as essential to future championship runs.

Warner’s deal not only rewards past performance but also reinforces his role as the heart of the 49ers’ defense. In a league where durability and versatility are increasingly prized, Warner’s contract sets a new benchmark for linebackers, proving that excellence—on and off the field—comes at a premium.
