WASHINGTON, D.C. — Justin Gaethje fulfilled a career-long goal Saturday night, dethroning previously unbeaten champion Ilia Topuria and claiming the UFC lightweight championship in a dramatic stoppage victory at UFC White House. The victory came after months of confidence from Topuria, who had publicly predicted a first-round knockout and even suggested the fight would end within two minutes. Instead, it was Gaethje who emerged victorious after four grueling rounds, forcing Topuria's corner to stop the contest before the fifth round could begin. Speaking after the fight, Justin Gaethje reflected on the former champion's bold pre-fight statements and the difficult road he now faces following his first professional defeat. "I've always respected him and what he's accomplished," Gaethje said. "But this sport is unforgiving. He believed he was unbeatable. I never looked at fighting that way. With how I compete, I've always understood that anything can happen." Gaethje revealed he sensed a shift in momentum early in the fight after landing a sharp uppercut that opened a cut near Topuria's eye. According to the new champion, the injury appeared to become a distraction for the undefeated star. Despite absorbing dangerous strikes throughout the opening rounds, Gaethje weathered the storm and gradually began to impose his pace. By the third round, he felt Topuria's explosiveness fading as repeated jabs and pressure started taking their toll. "The game plan was to make him work and force him backward," Gaethje explained. "Once he started fighting off the back foot, I knew the fight was changing."
Topuria briefly threatened with a submission attempt late in the second round, but Gaethje escaped and continued to build momentum. As the championship rounds approached, the challenger increasingly controlled the action, landing heavy combinations and damaging strikes that left the former champion battered. The punishment became severe enough that Topuria's coaches elected to stop the fight following the fourth round, handing him the first loss of his professional career and crowning Gaethje as the new undisputed lightweight champion. While immediate rematches are often discussed when champions lose their titles, Gaethje made it clear he does not believe another fight with Topuria should be next.
"I don't see a rematch right now," Gaethje said. "I felt like I controlled the fight. I won three rounds to one and finished the job. He'll have to rebuild and work his way back."
The win marks one of the biggest victories of Gaethje's career and cements his place atop one of the UFC's most competitive divisions. As for Topuria, the former champion now faces the challenge of recovering from a devastating defeat and beginning the climb back toward title contention.
