Garand records first career shutout as Rangers blank Red Wings 2-0.

DETROIT — Dylan Garand stopped all 22 shots he faced for the first shutout of his career as the New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on Friday night. Sean Durzi gave New York the lead with a first-period power-play goal, and Eeli Tolvanen sealed the victory with an empty-net goal late in the third period. Garand made his first start of the season after appearing in three games for the Rangers last season, going 2-0-1. New York was playing its third game of the season and its second game in two nights after beating Tampa Bay 5-1 on Thursday. Durzi opened the scoring at 5:12 of the first period. He finished a power-play opportunity from the high slot after receiving a pass from Gabe Perreault. The Rangers carried the 1-0 advantage into the third period, with Garand continuing to keep Detroit off the scoreboard. Tolvanen then added his second goal of the season with 1:16 remaining to put the game out of reach. John Gibson made 19 saves for the Red Wings. Detroit entered its season opener without two key players. Former captain Dylan Larkin, who has requested a trade, was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson also remained unsigned as contract negotiations continued. Marco Kasper and Durzi fought midway through the second period as the Red Wings tried to generate momentum. The Rangers will return home Sunday to host Utah. Detroit will host Winnipeg on Sunday.
