FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Scotland opened its FIFA World Cup Group C campaign with a 1-0 victory over Haiti on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, earning three points thanks to a first-half goal from John McGinn. McGinn scored the match’s lone goal in the 28th minute, capping a strong opening half for Scotland. Steve Clarke’s side created the better chances before the break, including an effort that struck the woodwork, and carried a 0.92-0.69 expected goals advantage into halftime. Despite controlling only 45 percent of possession in the first half, Scotland was more effective in dangerous areas and held a 2-1 edge in shots on target. Haiti showed attacking intent but struggled to convert opportunities, with three offsides limiting its momentum before the interval. Haiti increased the pressure after halftime, spending long stretches on the front foot and forcing Scotland to defend deep. However, Scotland’s back line remained organized and resilient, preventing Haiti from finding an equalizer.
The match featured a physical battle, with Haiti committing 13 fouls compared to Scotland’s nine. Both teams lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, but Scotland’s ability to capitalize on its opportunities proved to be the difference. Defender Grant Hanley earned Player of the Match honors on Sofascore after helping Scotland secure the clean sheet in front of 64,146 fans.
With the victory, Scotland begins Group C play atop the standings, while Haiti will look to rebound in its next World Cup fixture.
