Major League Baseball plans to expand its presence in Europe in the upcoming seasons. This news coincides with the commencement of the latest London Series, featuring games between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, scheduled for this weekend. Furthermore, these developments follow the success of previous series, which effectively increased the enthusiasm of British residents towards the sport.
"We’ve clearly identified the U.K. as a priority market and an area that we plan to emphasize for international growth of Major League Baseball," said Chris Marinak, MLB's chief operations and strategy officer”
According to the report, the number of followers on MLB's social media accounts based in the U.K. has experienced a significant increase, with a growth of 133 percent in just one year since the last London Series. Additionally, merchandise sales in England have also seen a rise of 43 percent. Although the league had initially planned to hold a series in Paris in 2025, challenges in securing a promoter, stadium, and scheduling conflicts ultimately resulted in its cancellation in 2023.
Major League Baseball aims to increase the number of international games in its schedule
In the 2023 London series, the majority of the 55,000 fans present at each game were from the UK, indicating sustained interest. Additionally, the BBC secured broadcasting rights for both the World Series and the London series matches in the current year.
MLB remains optimistic about the resolution of the stadium situation in Paris, where the Stade de France is currently up for sale. The league hopes that this issue will be resolved soon, allowing for the rescheduling of a series. Additionally, there is growing interest in the game of baseball in Germany and Italy, which may lead to games being played in other parts of continental Europe.
Looking ahead to 2025, the league has plans to bring the excitement of baseball to Tokyo, with the participation of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. Given the presence of former Japanese baseball league talent on both teams, these games are expected to draw large crowds and sell out. MLB will also be returning to Mexico City and Puerto Rico in 2025.
Baseball has ample room for international growth, and the success of virtually all their series thus far is a testament to this. The involvement of the BBC in broadcasting games further demonstrates that regular season contests can generate more revenue and fan interest. The league now has the opportunity to expand even further and capitalize on this potential for growth.
