LeBron James has chosen not to exercise the final year of his $51.4 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for the upcoming season and will seek to negotiate a new agreement with the team. The 39-year-old had until 5 p.m. ET on Saturday to notify the Lakers of his final decision.

Paul mentioned that James is open to collaborating with the Lakers on a contract that falls below the maximum three-year, $162 million he is entitled to, in order to utilize the full $12.9 million midlevel exception to sign a high-impact player. Sources have indicated that James would be willing to make a financial sacrifice for an experienced veteran playmaker like James Harden or Klay Thompson, or a seasoned big man to complement Anthony Davis, such as Jonas Valančiūnas. If the Lakers are unsuccessful in attracting a player of that caliber to Los Angeles for the midlevel exception, James will opt for the maximum contract, as per Paul's statement to ESPN. Nevertheless, James has limited time to negotiate his next deal with the Lakers, as Team USA's training camp for the upcoming Paris Olympics commences in Las Vegas in a week.

Paul informed ESPN that he intends to finalize an agreement with the Lakers for James prior to the commencement of the Team USA camp. Los Angeles selected James' oldest son, Bronny James, with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the NBA draft on Thursday.Throughout the previous season, James maintained an average of 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.3 rebounds in 71 games - marking the highest number of games he has participated in during his six seasons with the team. He achieved a shooting percentage of 54% from the field and a career-high 41% from 3-point range, earning a spot on the All-NBA third team and becoming the first player in NBA history to surpass 40,000 points.

On Saturday, the Lakers took another step by extending a qualifying offer of $2.3 million to Max Christie, a 21-year-old guard. A league source confirmed to ESPN that Christie is now a restricted free agent. If Christie receives an offer from another team, the Lakers will have the option to match it. This offer was first reported by USA Today.
