Hunter Goodman’s Historic Rise and His Path Toward Becoming the Greatest Catcher in Rockies History.

Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman has quickly emerged as one of the most important building blocks for the franchise’s future. During the 2025 season, Goodman delivered a historic performance that placed him in uncharted territory among catchers in team history and sparked conversations about his long-term legacy in Colorado. Goodman became the first catcher in Rockies history to win the National League Silver Slugger Award at his position. This achievement alone separates him from every catcher who has previously worn a Rockies uniform and highlights his elite offensive production behind the plate. At 26 years old, the Arlington, Tennessee native gave Rockies fans optimism during an otherwise difficult season. Despite the team’s struggles in the competitive National League West, Goodman’s individual success stood out. He finished the 2025 campaign batting .278 with 31 home runs and 91 runs batted in, earning his first career All-Star selection along the way. His performance provided a bright spot during a year marked by heavy losses. Although Goodman’s résumé includes only one standout season so far, the historical context of the catcher position in Colorado gives his accomplishments added weight. The Rockies have never had a long list of elite catchers, which creates a clear opportunity for Goodman to establish himself as the best the organization has ever had at the position over the next several seasons.

Joe Girardi served as the franchise’s first primary catcher from 1993 to 1995 and played a role in the Rockies’ historic run to the National League Wild Card in 1995. Chris Iannetta later became a dependable option behind the plate, with his most productive season coming in 2007 when he hit 18 home runs. Yorvit Torrealba also left his mark during the late 2000s, most notably with a clutch home run in Game 163 against the San Diego Padres during the 2007 season. Each of these players contributed to the foundation of the catcher position in Colorado, but none reached the offensive heights Goodman achieved in 2025. With continued consistency, Goodman has the potential to surpass his predecessors and define a new standard for the role. Goodman will not be expected to carry the franchise alone. The Rockies’ future includes promising talent such as Ezequiel Tovar, Charlie Condon, and emerging prospects like Ethan Holliday. Surrounded by a developing core, Goodman’s leadership and power at the plate could help guide the team toward long-term improvement.

An aggressive hitter with strong baserunning instincts, Goodman has already proven his value as a power threat.

If he can build upon his breakout season with additional All-Star selections, more Silver Slugger awards, and possibly his first Gold Glove, Hunter Goodman may ultimately secure his place as the greatest catcher in Colorado Rockies history.
