The seventh-ranked Iowa State Cyclones delivered a commanding performance against Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils 91–42 in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on March 11 in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cyclones controlled the game from the start, overwhelming Arizona State with strong offense and forcing numerous turnovers. Milan Momcilovic led Iowa State with 21 points, while Joshua Jefferson recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Blake Buchanan added 17 points, and Tamin Lipsey contributed 11 points to help the fifth-seeded Cyclones improve their record to 26–6. The victory marked Iowa State’s second win over the Sun Devils in less than a week and advanced them to the quarterfinals, where they will face Texas Tech. Arizona State struggled throughout the game, finishing with a 17–16 record. Santiago Trouet led the team with 13 points, but the Sun Devils had difficulty on offense, making only one of their 19 attempts from three-point range. They also committed 23 turnovers and received three technical fouls during the contest. Iowa State established control early and led 45–16 at halftime. A major turning point occurred late in the first half when the Cyclones went on an 18–0 scoring run. During this sequence, a hard foul by Arizona State’s Pig Johnson on Blake Buchanan was upgraded to a flagrant foul.
Shortly afterward, Massamba Diop received a technical foul, followed by another technical issued to head coach Bobby Hurley for arguing the call. Iowa State capitalized by making five of six free throws before Jamarion Batemon scored an easy basket, extending the lead to 40–10 with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Following the game, Arizona State athletic director Graham Rossini announced that Bobby Hurley’s contract would not be renewed. Hurley, who coached the Sun Devils for 11 seasons, will be placed on paid administrative leave until his contract expires in June. With the win, Iowa State advances to face fourth-seeded Texas Tech in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Texas Tech previously defeated the Cyclones 82–73 on February 28. Meanwhile, Arizona State will begin its search for a new head coach as the program looks ahead to the future.
