EUGENE, Ore. -- Dillon Gabriel, after orchestrating the decisive drive for Oregon, found himself seated on the Ducks' bench, headset in place, as the final moments of the game slipped away and Ohio State mounted a challenge. Moments later, he emerged from the victorious locker room, celebrating with fans who had rushed the field. He concluded the evening by singing during his postgame press conference. In his first significant game since transferring to Oregon in the offseason, Gabriel excelled, leading the third-ranked Ducks to a thrilling 32-31 victory over the second-ranked Buckeyes. "We all anticipated a fierce battle, two heavyweights clashing," Gabriel remarked. "That encapsulates the essence of college football." Few players possess as much knowledge of college football as Gabriel, who made his 55th career start on Saturday. Having previously played for UCF and Oklahoma, he began the season as a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. Following a sluggish start, he firmly reestablished his candidacy with an impressive performance in the Big Ten clash against the Buckeyes. Gabriel completed 23 of 34 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns, and he scored the game-winning touchdown with a 27-yard rush on a masterful fake handoff that deceived the Ohio State defense in the fourth quarter. This achievement made him the first FBS player to record 125 touchdown passes and 30 rushing touchdowns in his career. "Every time I looked into his eyes tonight, I saw a player who was composed and ready for the next challenge," stated Oregon coach Dan Lanning. "He performed exceptionally well and had several pivotal moments." The most critical moment occurred during Oregon's final drive. Trailing 31-29 with six minutes remaining, Gabriel completed all five of his passes for a total of 41 yards. Although the drive ultimately stalled at the Ohio State 1-yard line, Atticus Sappington successfully kicked a 19-yard field goal, granting the Ducks the lead with 1:47 left on the clock.

Ohio State had an opportunity to secure victory, advancing the ball to the Oregon 28-yard line. However, freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was penalized for offensive pass interference, which resulted in the Buckeyes being pushed out of field goal range. On the final play, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard opted to scramble down the center of the field and slid instead of attempting a pass into the end zone, as time ran out and Oregon students and fans flooded the field. Oregon wide receiver Tez Johnson remarked, "[Gabriel] demonstrated resilience," referring to quarterback Gabriel, who connected on a 48-yard touchdown pass on third-and-9 late in the second quarter, giving the Ducks a 22-21 advantage at halftime. "He faced a top-two opponent and emerged victorious. That speaks volumes. ... His composure throughout the game was remarkable." According to ESPN Research, the last time an Associated Press top-three matchup was decided by a single point was in 1991, when No. 2 Miami triumphed over No. 1 Florida State 17-16. The Hurricanes subsequently claimed the national championship that year. Oregon's triumph over Ohio State positioned the Ducks (6-0) favorably in the Big Ten title and playoff races. They are among three undefeated teams in the Big Ten, alongside Penn State and Indiana, neither of which they will face in the regular season. Gabriel acknowledged that there remains a significant portion of the season ahead and much to accomplish in pursuit of their objectives. However, when reflecting on his journey from Orlando, Florida, to Norman, Oklahoma, and finally to Eugene, he began to sing the phrase "coast to coast" before pausing to await the continuation of the question.

He expressed, "I have gained significant insights at each stage of my journey, and more crucially, I have discovered my identity." He continued, "At this juncture in my career, I truly value my current position. ... I have cherished every moment." As Gabriel emerged from the locker room to the throng of fans eagerly awaiting him on the field just beyond the tunnel, he opened his arms wide, fully embracing the experience. He took an oversized Oregon hat from one supporter and placed it atop his head. Gabriel then turned to embrace his coaches and teammates before returning to the locker room, where the festivities persisted. "When you achieve victory against a formidable opponent, you savor that moment," Gabriel remarked. "Winning is exhilarating. There is immense joy in triumph. ... However, we recognize that this is merely a step forward. Tomorrow, we must rise and continue to earn our success."
