The Italian national team delivered one of the most surprising victories in the history of the World Baseball Classic by defeating United States national baseball team 8–6 on Tuesday night in Houston. Entering the game as heavy favorites, Team USA fell behind early and was unable to fully recover, putting its advancement to the quarterfinals in jeopardy. Earlier in the day, Team USA manager Mark DeRosa mistakenly stated during an interview on MLB Network that the United States had already secured a spot in the tournament’s knockout round. Later, DeRosa clarified that he misspoke and acknowledged that the team had not yet clinched a quarterfinal berth. Instead, Team USA’s fate now depends on the final Pool B matchup between Italy and Mexico. Italy built its lead early behind strong pitching from Michael Lorenzen, who delivered 4⅔ scoreless innings against a powerful American lineup. The U.S. roster included stars such as Aaron Judge, Bobby Witt Jr., and Kyle Schwarber, but the team struggled to generate offense in the early innings. Italy capitalized with several key hits, including multiple home runs that helped build an 8–0 lead. Italy manager Francisco Cervelli praised his team after the victory, calling it one of the best moments of his life. He emphasized the pride and determination shown by his players, many of whom are younger athletes competing against some of the biggest names in Major League Baseball.

Although Team USA mounted a late rally, highlighted by two home runs from Pete Crow-Armstrong, the comeback fell short. Italy’s bullpen held firm in the final innings, and the game ended when Judge struck out as the potential tying run waited on base. With the loss, Team USA must now wait for the outcome of the Italy–Mexico game to determine whether it advances. If Italy wins, the United States will still move on. However, if Mexico wins under certain scoring conditions, the Americans could be eliminated from the tournament. As Judge acknowledged after the game, Team USA no longer controls its own destiny and must rely on results elsewhere to keep its championship hopes alive.
