Johannes erupts for 25 as Liberty edge Mystics 98–93 in overtime.


WASHINGTON — Marine Johannes drilled six 3-pointers and finished with 25 points, while Breanna Stewart added 23 points and nine rebounds to lift the New York Liberty to a 98–93 overtime win over the Washington Mystics on Sunday. Rookie Pauline Astier delivered an all-around performance, scoring 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-7 from the free-throw line, while adding seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for New York (2-0). Jonquel Jones chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. Stewart had a chance to seal it in regulation but missed a potential game-winning jumper, sending the contest into overtime tied at 92. In the extra period, Johannes knocked down a clutch 3-pointer and Astier followed with a driving layup to give the Liberty a six-point cushion with under two minutes remaining. Washington responded behind Shakira Austin, who converted inside, before Kiki Iriafen scored four straight points to tie it again at 92 with 33.5 seconds left. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton then sank two free throws to put New York back in front. After a turnover by Sonia Citron, Astier calmly hit a pair from the line to extend the lead to four, helping seal the victory. Iriafen led Washington (1-1) with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Citron added 17 points. Austin recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, and Georgia Amoore contributed seven points and seven assists. The Mystics briefly grabbed momentum early in the fourth quarter when Alex Wilson scored on a putback to cut the deficit to one, and Cassandre Prosper followed with a reverse layup to give Washington its first lead since the second quarter. New York played without Sabrina Ionescu (left foot), Satou Sabally (cyst) and Rebecca Allen (left leg). Up next:The Liberty travel to Portland on Tuesday, while the Mystics return to action Friday at Indiana.
