Philadelphia – In one of the most dramatic finishes of the NFL season so far, defensive tackle Jordan Davis capped off a thrilling fourth quarter by returning a blocked field goal 61 yards for a touchdown, lifting the Philadelphia Eagles to a 33–26 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. The improbable play as time expired sealed the reigning Super Bowl champions’ third straight win to open the 2025 season and marked their twelfth consecutive home victory. Davis, who weighs 336 pounds, reached a top speed of 18.59 mph on the play, the fastest by a player over 330 pounds since at least 2017, according to Next Gen Stats. “If I tried to run away,” Davis joked after the game, “I was going to get moshed.” The Rams, who led by as much as 19 points midway through the third quarter, appeared poised to send the game to overtime after quarterback Matthew Stafford led a last-minute drive to set up a potential game-tying 44-yard field goal with three seconds remaining. But the Eagles had other plans. Davis powered through the line to block Joshua Karty’s kick, scooped up the ball, and rumbled to the end zone as Lincoln Financial Field erupted.
This wasn’t Philadelphia’s only special teams highlight. Earlier in the fourth quarter, defensive tackle Jalen Carter blocked another Karty attempt, a 36-yarder, sparking the momentum shift the Eagles needed. Although Carter was flagged for taunting after the play, quarterback Jalen Hurts responded by leading a 17-play, 91-yard drive that ended in a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith with under two minutes remaining.
Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, shook off a sluggish start and threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. A.J. Brown contributed six receptions for 109 yards, while Smith added eight catches for 60 yards and the decisive score. “We’ve got so many good players on this team. At times, you can feel we’re being conservative,” said Brown postgame. “I don’t think it should be like that. Let your killers do their thing. Play fast and play aggressive.” The Eagles' 19-point comeback marked their largest at Lincoln Financial Field since the stadium opened in 2003 and their biggest home rally since overcoming a 20-point deficit against the Cowboys in 1988.
Despite the loss, the Rams (2–1) had standout performances from Stafford, who threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns, and wide receiver Puka Nacua, who hauled in 11 receptions for 112 yards. Karty was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals before the critical fourth-quarter blocks.
A concerning trend continues for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who rushed for only 46 yards on Sunday—his third straight sub-50-yard performance. Barkley had dominated the Rams in both matchups last season but has struggled to find rhythm early this year, now sitting at just 194 rushing yards through three games.
Philadelphia (3–0) now prepares for a road matchup against Tampa Bay, while Los Angeles returns home to host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4.
