The Chicago Sky secured their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating the Dallas Wings 97–92. The game was highlighted by a career performance from rookie Kamilla Cardoso and record-breaking achievements from veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot. Cardoso, a rising star in her debut WNBA season, scored a career-high 23 points. She was particularly effective in the first half, contributing 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and collecting three of Chicago’s 11 offensive rebounds. Her physical presence in the post helped the Sky build a 13-point lead before entering halftime ahead 49–43.
Veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot had a milestone night. With 13 points, nine assists, and four steals, Vandersloot passed her wife and former teammate Allie Quigley to become the Sky’s all-time leader in both points (3,728) and field goals made (1,394). She tied the field goal record with a three-pointer in the second quarter and broke the scoring record with a mid-range jumper late in the third. Angel Reese, another rookie, played a crucial role in the final minutes. Her inside basket with 1:21 remaining gave the Sky a 93–92 lead that they would not relinquish. Reese ended the game with six points, nine rebounds, and five assists, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court.
Despite the loss, Dallas was powered by a stellar performance from Arike Ogunbowale, who scored a season-high 37 points. Ogunbowale, who had been struggling offensively this season, found her rhythm by shooting 14-of-25 from the field and 6-of-12 from three-point range. She hit a go-ahead three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining, giving Dallas a brief 92–91 lead. However, she went scoreless the rest of the way as Chicago finished the game on a 6–0 run. The Wings, now 1–5, had snapped their losing streak earlier in the week with a 109–87 win over Connecticut but could not maintain that momentum. Meanwhile, the Sky, also now 1–4, will look to build on this performance as they continue their early-season schedule.
This game not only marked a critical win for Chicago but also represented a symbolic passing of the torch from Quigley to Vandersloot. With Cardoso and Reese emerging as key contributors, the Sky may have found the building blocks for their future.
