LAWRENCE, Kan. — Darryn Peterson scored 18 points in 20 minutes as No. 14 Kansas overcame a second-half surge to defeat No. 13 BYU 90-82 on Saturday, marking the 1,000th game at historic Allen Fieldhouse.
Bryson Tiller added a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds for the Jayhawks (16-5, 6-2 Big 12), helping Kansas maintain a double-digit lead for most of the contest. Kansas built a 20-point advantage by halftime, shooting 64.3 percent from the field and hitting 9 of 12 three-point attempts, including 18 points from Peterson.
BYU (17-4, 5-3) stayed competitive behind Richie Saunders, who scored a career-high 33 points with six three-pointers, tying his personal best. Freshman AJ Dybantsa, the nation’s leading scorer entering the game with 23.6 points per contest, was held scoreless until late in the first half but finished with 17 points, including a key three-pointer that ended a 13-0 Kansas run.
Despite BYU cutting the lead to six points with under two minutes remaining, Kansas closed the game on an 8-4 run to secure the victory. The win continues Kansas’ momentum in Big 12 play, demonstrating depth and resilience even with Peterson limited due to injuries. Peterson, battling hamstring and calf issues, exited a little more than three minutes into the second half, highlighting the team’s ability to perform without their star for extended stretches.
This victory adds to Kansas’ strong home record at Allen Fieldhouse, reinforcing their historical dominance at one of college basketball’s most storied venues. BYU, meanwhile, will need to address late-game execution as they prepare to face Oklahoma State on Wednesday.
Up next, Kansas will travel to No. 11 Texas Tech on Monday, aiming to extend their Big 12 winning streak, while BYU looks to rebound on the road against Oklahoma State.
