Kansas Jayhawks Defeat Texas Tech 64 to 61 in Big 12 Conference Battle

Darryn Peterson’s clutch scoring propelled the No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks to a 64 to 61 road victory over the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders in a tightly contested conference matchup.

Kansas overcame a late nine point deficit with a decisive 14 to 2 run down the stretch, marking its sixth consecutive win and strengthening its standing in one of college basketball’s most competitive leagues.

Peterson led Kansas with 19 points and hit two key three point shots in the final 80 seconds that tied the game and then gave the Jayhawks the lead for good. Melvin Council Jr. added 16 points and seven rebounds, and Flory Bidunga contributed 14 points and nine boards in a balanced effort on both ends of the court. Bryson Tiller also played a pivotal role by securing 10 rebounds and helping control tempo late.

Texas Tech, playing without starting point guard Christian Anderson due to illness, held a 59 to 50 lead with just over six minutes remaining on a jumper by LeJuan Watts, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Despite their strong first three quarters, the Red Raiders made only one of their final 12 shots as Kansas mounted its comeback. Donovan Atwell also made an impact for Texas Tech, hitting several three point shots throughout the contest.

The game featured 10 lead changes and six ties, reflecting the tight competitive balance between these Big 12 programs. Kansas shot 45.3 percent from the field and hit 6 of 20 three point attempts, while Texas Tech’s early efficiency gave it momentum before the Jayhawks executed a disciplined end-game strategy to secure the road victory.

This victory has key implications for conference standings and NCAA Tournament seeding. Kansas improved to 17-5 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 play, enhancing its profile with consecutive wins over ranked opponents. Texas Tech fell to 16-6 and 6-3 in league play but remains in contention in the crowded middle of the Big 12 standings.

Kansas history against Texas Tech now stands markedly in favor of the Jayhawks, who have won 44 of 53 all time meetings, including this latest road win in Lubbock, Texas.

What this means next for Kansas is continued momentum as it prepares for its next Big 12 challenge, likely with confidence in close game execution.

For Texas Tech, the loss reinforces the value of depth and late game scoring as the Red Raiders aim to rebound in upcoming conference match ups.
