As Kansas State women's basketball guard Serena Sundell looked back on her collegiate journey last month after the Wildcats' defeat to Southern California in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, she expressed amazement at her progress over the past four years. Her achievements were further recognized on Friday when she received an invitation to be one of 15 players attending the 2025 WNBA Draft in New York. The draft is scheduled to commence at 6:30 p.m. central time, with coverage available on ESPN and the ESPN App starting at 6.
"I would just credit my coaching staff and teammates for helping me grow over the last four years," Sundell said after helping the Wildcats reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2002. "I'm a much better player, and I have a lot more confidence than the 18-year-old I was when I first stepped on campus. So just a credit to the people around me, and yeah, I'm grateful to be a Wildcat."
Sundell, a 6-foot-1 point guard hailing from Maryville, Missouri, concluded her impressive collegiate career with averages of 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and a national-leading 7.3 assists per game. For the second consecutive year, she earned a spot on the Big 12 all-conference first team and was recognized as an honorable mention All-American alongside her teammate Ayoka Lee. Sundell departs K-State with a remarkable total of 1,771 career points, 577 rebounds, and a school-record 811 assists. In the Wildcats' final game of the season, a 67-61 defeat to USC in Spokane, Washington, she led her team with 22 points, six assists, and six rebounds. USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb expressed her admiration for Sundell, stating, "I'm a big fan of Sundell. I think she should be in somebody's WNBA camp for sure, if not drafted." Sundell regarded Gottlieb's comment as "a huge compliment," and there is strong anticipation regarding her selection in the upcoming draft, although her exact position remains uncertain. Three mock drafts list Sundell among the top 12 first-round picks, while one suggests she may barely make it into the top 30 in the third round. Yahoo forecasts her as the No. 9 overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks, USA Today predicts she will be selected by the Minnesota Lynx at No. 11, and Bleacher Report has her going to the Dallas Wings at No. 12. In contrast, nbadraftroom.com anticipates she will drop to No. 29 overall to the Seattle Storm. Once selected, Sundell will become the ninth player in her school's history to be chosen in the WNBA Draft, making her the 12th Wildcat to compete in the league and the first since Breanna Lewis in 2018.
