Klay Thompson to Join Heat on Two-Year Deal After Mavericks Buyout.

Klay Thompson is heading to Miami after reaching an agreement on a two-year contract with the Heat following his buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, sources told ESPN. The deal is worth nearly $13 million and includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. Thompson became a free agent after clearing waivers following the Mavericks' decision to buy out the final year of his contract. Thompson, 36, was originally scheduled to earn $17.5 million during the final season of his Dallas deal. The buyout came after Thompson informed the Mavericks that he wanted to pursue an opportunity with a championship contender. Miami quickly emerged as Thompson's preferred destination after the Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade. The Heat viewed Thompson as a priority addition to provide another proven perimeter shooter alongside Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

Thompson spent the past two seasons in Dallas after joining the Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal in 2024. He averaged 12.9 points per game during his time with the franchise while shooting 38.7% from 3-point range. Despite his reduced production compared with his prime years, Thompson remains one of the NBA's most accomplished shooters. He enters Miami ranked fourth on the league's all-time 3-point list with 2,899 made shots from beyond the arc.

The veteran guard/forward is 75 3-pointers away from passing Hall of Famer Ray Allen for third place. James Harden currently sits second with 3,390, while Thompson's former Golden State teammate Stephen Curry holds the NBA record with 4,248.

Thompson spent the first 13 seasons of his career with Golden State, where he became a five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion. His Warriors tenure included significant setbacks after Achilles and knee injuries forced him to miss consecutive seasons.

Now, Thompson will look to add another championship opportunity to his career as Miami builds around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo.
