Royce Lewis showcased his power with his first career multi-homer game and Joe Ryan struck out 11 batters across seven dominant innings as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Colorado Rockies 7–1 on Sunday afternoon. The victory allowed the Twins to avoid a three-game sweep at Target Field. Ryan (10–4), making his first start since appearing in the All-Star Game, limited Colorado to one run on five hits without issuing a walk. The right-hander was in control throughout the game, consistently locating his fastball and finishing with 11 strikeouts over 94 pitches. His recent All-Star appearance, in which he struck out two in a scoreless fourth inning, seemed to carry over into Sunday’s performance. Minnesota’s offense backed Ryan early. In the third inning, Willi Castro drew a walk and later scored on a triple by Kody Clemens. Two batters later, Matt Wallner crushed a two-run home run to right, giving the Twins a 3–1 lead. Lewis added solo shots in the fourth and seventh innings, continuing his hot stretch since returning from injury. Harrison Bader also homered for the Twins. The Rockies’ lone run came on a third-inning solo homer by Mickey Moniak. Jordan Beck and Ryan McMahon each had two hits, but Colorado managed just five hits in total against Ryan and relievers Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran, who combined for two scoreless innings to close out the game.
The Twins racked up 12 hits in total, including six for extra bases. According to the Associated Press, “Minnesota racked up 12 hits — six for extra bases — and Twins pitchers had 13 strikeouts'". The win was a much-needed morale boost for the Twins as they prepare for a tough road trip beginning Monday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani (0–0, 1.00 ERA) is expected to start for the Dodgers. Minnesota has not yet announced a starting pitcher. The Rockies, meanwhile, will return home to host the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
