Inter Miami may welcome back Lionel Messi for the first time since June 1 during their match against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday. Head coach Tata Martino informed reporters on Friday that Messi has been cleared from any restrictions regarding his ankle injury and could participate in the forthcoming game. This marks Messi's second season with the Major League Soccer team, where he initially showcased exceptional performance, recording 12 goals and 13 assists in just 12 matches before his injury. Despite his extended absence, he currently ranks third in the league for assists and is tied for 13th in goals.

If he had maintained his health, he could have easily secured the league MVP award. This is not unexpected, as he is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time. The injury occurred while he was in the process of adding another accolade to his achievements during the final of the 2024 Copa América, where his Argentina team triumphed over Colombia. Although he played a pivotal role in leading Inter Miami to a Leagues Cup victory in 2023, he still lacks an MLS Cup on his record. The team did not qualify for the playoffs last season due to Messi's late arrival, but they are currently well-positioned to contend for the title this year, even in the absence of their star player.

The Herons currently lead the Eastern Conference standings with a record of 18 victories, five draws, and four defeats. Their total of 59 points places them significantly ahead of their closest competitors, FC Cincinnati, who have accumulated 51 points from 27 matches, and the Columbus Crew, with 49 points from 26 games. This advantageous position will grant Messi and his teammates home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, provided the current standings remain unchanged. Securing the top seed in the East is particularly crucial due to the presence of three formidable championship contenders. FC Cincinnati, last year's Supporters' Shield winners, advanced to the Eastern Conference Final, while the Crew, the reigning champions, have the chance to ascend to the No. 2 seed with a victory over their rival on Saturday. Should Inter Miami maintain their status as the No. 1 seed, they would avoid a potential matchup against either Ohio team until the Eastern Conference Final. Furthermore, Messi is expected to be in peak condition by that time, especially if he returns to the pitch as early as Saturday.
