As NFL training camps begin, roster competition intensifies — and in Denver, second-year running back Jaleel McLaughlin finds himself on the hot seat. The Denver Broncos’ recent signing of second-round draft pick RJ Harvey signals a clear shift in direction for the backfield, and McLaughlin may be one of the early casualties. McLaughlin, once seen as a breakout candidate, enters training camp coming off a sophomore slump. While his snap count increased from 193 to 296 in 2024, his per-touch efficiency took a noticeable dip. According to advanced metrics, McLaughlin’s yards per carry, yards after contact, and receiving yards all regressed. Outside of a few bright spots, notably games against Cleveland and Cincinnati, he struggled to consistently impact the offense. Adding to the pressure is the Broncos’ renewed emphasis on the running game. With RJ Harvey — a dynamic runner out of Central Florida — now under contract, and veterans like Samaje Perine still on the roster, the competition for touches is steep. Harvey’s second-round selection shows Denver is heavily invested in his development, which could mean reduced opportunities for McLaughlin moving forward. Special teams, typically a lifeline for fringe roster players, hasn't been McLaughlin’s strength. Reports from OTAs indicate he’s getting reps on kickoff return, but he’ll need to shine in that role if he hopes to remain on the 53-man roster. With younger backs like Tyler Badie and Blake Watson also fighting for spots, every rep will matter.
What could keep McLaughlin in Denver is his existing relationship with head coach Sean Payton. Having already spent two years in Payton’s system, McLaughlin might benefit from familiarity and trust — but that advantage won’t last long if his on-field performance doesn’t improve. The Broncos’ first preseason game will be a crucial proving ground for McLaughlin. If he cannot distinguish himself as a versatile playmaker or reliable special teamer, his time in Denver may be nearing an end.
