WEST LAFAYETTE — No. 13 Michigan State held off No. 8 Purdue 76-74 Thursday night in a tense Big Ten clash, snapping a seven-game losing streak at Mackey Arena and solidifying its standing in the conference race.
Carson Cooper led the Spartans with 15 points, while Kur Teng added 13. Jeremy Fears Jr. contributed 12 and Coen Carr 11 as Michigan State improved to 23-5 overall and 13-4 in Big Ten play. The victory gives Tom Izzo’s squad critical momentum as the season heads into its final week.
Braden Smith, who became the fifth Division I player to reach 1,000 career assists, finished with 12 points and 10 assists for the Boilermakers (22-6, 12-5). Jack Benter added 11 points, but Purdue could not convert the final opportunity when Smith missed a contested 3-point attempt with one second left.
Michigan State built a key 6-0 run after Smith narrowed the deficit to 66-64 with 5:48 remaining. Purdue cut the lead to 74-72 following Smith’s 3-pointer and driving layup with 2:16 to play, but Michigan State managed the closing possessions with composure, despite Cam Ward missing the front end of a one-and-one in the final minute. Purdue committed nine turnovers compared to six for the Spartans.
The first half was competitive with seven lead changes. Purdue led 39-36 at the break after hitting six of eleven 3-point attempts, while Michigan State made three of nine. Oscar Cluff scored all 10 of his points in the first half for Purdue. Michigan State erased an early 13-6 deficit with a 10-0 run to take a 16-13 lead midway through the first half, establishing the rhythm for the second half.
Statistically, Michigan State shot 53 percent from the field, while Purdue hit 49 percent. The Spartans’ balanced scoring and defensive pressure on Purdue in the final minutes proved decisive.
The outcome impacts the Big Ten standings, keeping Michigan State in strong contention for a top seed in the conference tournament. Purdue, meanwhile, faces pressure to rebound quickly with one week remaining in the regular season.
Next steps: Michigan State travels to Indiana on Sunday to maintain momentum, while Purdue heads to Ohio State on Sunday seeking to stabilize its late-season performance. This latest result will factor into seeding and postseason outlooks for both programs.
