LANDOVER, Md. – In a nail-biting overtime showdown, the Denver Broncos edged past the Washington Commanders, 27-26, thanks to a game-saving play by linebacker Nik Bonitto. Bonitto batted down Marcus Mariota’s pass on a two-point conversion attempt, denying Washington the victory and keeping Denver’s winning streak alive at nine games.
The drama unfolded quickly in overtime. After Broncos running back RJ Harvey scored on the first possession, Mariota orchestrated a determined drive for the Commanders, aided by a fourth-and-6 pass-interference penalty. With fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line, Mariota connected with Terry McLaurin for a touchdown. Washington went for a two-point conversion, but Bonitto’s timely leap prevented the pass from reaching its target.
“I knew he was buying time,” Bonitto said. “At that point I was just trying to make it hard for him to throw the ball, and I ended up knocking it down and we ended up winning the game.”
Bo Nix led the Broncos with 321 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Denver coach Sean Payton emphasized the significance of the win in the context of playoff positioning. “We didn't escape. We won,” Payton said. “The journey of a good team’s season involves games like this. And then you believe you can do it again.”
For Washington, the loss marked their seventh consecutive defeat and second straight overtime heartbreak. Mariota, starting in place of injured Jayden Daniels, threw for 294 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. One of his touchdown passes to Treylon Burks featured a spectacular one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone, showing flashes of brilliance despite the team’s struggles.
“I think putting together a great week of practice, we just continue to stack these,” Mariota said. “Regardless of what it looks like for us, it's all about the process and the journey, and the more we can find ways to improve week-to-week, I think that sets a solid foundation for what's to come.” Tight end Zach Ertz was a standout for Washington, finishing with 10 receptions for 106 yards, surpassing Shannon Sharpe for the fifth-most receptions by a tight end in NFL history. McLaurin added seven catches for 96 yards. Coach Dan Quinn noted improvements in the running game, despite the disappointing outcome.
Denver’s defense, though registering only two sacks, consistently pressured Mariota and forced a critical interception early in the second quarter, caught by Dre Greenlaw. Meanwhile, Nix overcame an uneven start, connecting with Courtland Sutton for an 11-yard touchdown just before halftime, showcasing his resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
The fourth quarter saw dramatic swings, including an interception by Bobby Wagner leading to a Washington field goal. Denver’s offense struggled on its final three drives of regulation, allowing the Commanders to tie the game before overtime. Quinn praised his team’s competitive spirit, especially their decision to attempt a two-point conversion in overtime.
Next week, the Broncos will face the Las Vegas Raiders, while the Commanders travel to Minnesota, looking to build on small improvements despite their losing streak.
