AMES, Iowa — No. 16 Texas Tech ended No. 4 Iowa State’s unbeaten home season Saturday with an 82-73 victory at Hilton Coliseum, a breaking update that reshapes the Big 12 race entering the final week of the regular season.
Iowa State entered 15-0 at home but fell to 24-5 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Texas Tech improved to 22-7 and 12-4, remaining tied for second place with Houston and two games behind league leader Arizona in the latest Big 12 standings.
Donovan Atwell led Texas Tech with 18 points, continuing his emergence as one of the nation’s premier perimeter threats. Atwell, who ranks near the top nationally in 3 point production, shot 6 for 10 from beyond the arc and was one of six Red Raiders to score in double figures. Christian Anderson added 14 points, Luke Bamgboye scored 13, Jaylen Petty had 12, and Tyeree Bryan and Josiah Moseley contributed 10 each.
The victory carried added significance as Texas Tech continues the stretch run without JT Toppin, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, who is unavailable for the remainder of the season. The Red Raiders compensated with balanced scoring and defensive discipline, reinforcing their postseason outlook despite the absence of their top frontcourt presence.
Texas Tech built control in the first half with a decisive 20-2 run, converting 9 of 10 field goal attempts during that stretch to take a 45-29 lead into halftime. Iowa State attempted to respond in the second half behind Joshua Jefferson, who finished with 22 points, and Milan Momcilovic, who added 20. Tamin Lipsey contributed 13 as the Cyclones cut the deficit to 65-59 with 7:08 remaining.
The Red Raiders answered with a 10-0 run, capped by a Bryan layup with 3:20 left, restoring separation. Iowa State mounted one final push with an 11-0 surge in the closing minutes to narrow the margin to 79-73, but Texas Tech closed the game at the free throw line.
From an impact standpoint, the result significantly strengthens Texas Tech’s NCAA Tournament profile with a road win over a top five opponent. Historically, late season road victories against ranked Big 12 teams have carried substantial weight in seeding decisions. For Iowa State, the loss drops the Cyclones into a tie for fourth place with Kansas and ends one of the nation’s longest active home winning streaks.
The Cyclones are in the midst of a demanding six game stretch that includes five ranked opponents. They are now 3-2 during that span, underscoring both the challenge of their schedule and the competitive depth of the Big 12.
Next steps: Texas Tech returns home to host TCU on Tuesday, seeking to maintain its position in the conference standings. Iowa State travels to face No. 2 Arizona on Monday in a matchup that could further shift Big 12 seeding and influence NCAA Tournament projections.
