SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Henri Veesaar scored 19 points in his return to the starting lineup as No. 16 North Carolina secured a 77-64 road win over Syracuse on Saturday, delivering a critical ACC result after a difficult stretch.
The breaking update stabilizes North Carolina’s season outlook following a 24 point loss at North Carolina State earlier in the week and reinforces the Tar Heels’ positioning in the NCAA tournament race.
Veesaar, a 7 foot center averaging 16.4 points and 9.0 rebounds entering the game, had missed two contests before rejoining the lineup. His interior scoring and rim presence helped North Carolina control the paint 42-32 and reestablish offensive balance. The Tar Heels improved to 21-6 overall and 9-5 in ACC play.
Seth Trimble and Luka Bogavac each added 13 points, while Zayden High contributed nine. North Carolina generated 13 points off 10 Syracuse turnovers and limited extended scoring runs after halftime.
Syracuse, now 15-13 and 6-9 in conference play, was led by J J Starling with 22 points, including 14 in the second half. William Kyle III grabbed eight rebounds and sparked a brief momentum shift midway through the second half. After Starling opened the half with six consecutive points, Kyle stole the ball and finished coast to coast to tie the game at 44 with 12 minutes remaining.
The latest turning point followed immediately. North Carolina responded with an 8-0 run, highlighted by four points from Trimble, to regain control. Syracuse did not close within fewer than seven points the rest of the way.
Perimeter efficiency proved decisive. The Orange shot 3 of 17 from three point range, limiting spacing and allowing North Carolina to collapse defensively. The Tar Heels’ ability to protect the paint and convert turnovers into transition scoring reflected improved defensive intensity compared to recent outings.
North Carolina also continued to play without leading scorer Caleb Wilson, who averages 19.8 points per game and missed his third straight contest due to a hand injury. His timeline remains day to day, and his eventual return will significantly influence the team’s offensive ceiling. In his absence, the Tar Heels have emphasized interior production and balanced scoring rather than relying on a single perimeter creator.
From a conference perspective, the win keeps North Carolina within striking distance in the ACC standings as teams jockey for seeding ahead of the conference tournament.
Historically, the Tar Heels’ postseason success has correlated with interior dominance and defensive rebounding, two areas that showed measurable improvement Saturday.
For Syracuse, the loss marks its fourth in six games and underscores ongoing shooting inconsistency. The Orange remain competitive but must improve perimeter efficiency and ball security to strengthen their tournament outlook.
Next steps include North Carolina hosting Louisville on Monday, while Syracuse travels to Wake Forest on Saturday.
