Notre Dame's starting left tackle, Anthonie Knapp, will be unable to participate in the College Football Playoff National Championship game against Ohio State on January 20 due to a high ankle sprain, as announced by Coach Marcus Freeman on Sunday. Knapp sustained the injury during Notre Dame's 27-24 victory over Penn State in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Graduate senior Tosh Baker took over for Knapp in the second quarter. Additionally, Freeman indicated that starting right guard Rocco Spindler, who appeared to have sustained an ankle injury during the game against Penn State, will attempt to practice this week. Charles Jagusah filled in for Spindler during that match. "We will assess his progress throughout the week of practice," Freeman stated. "I am confident he will exert every effort to ensure he is ready. Regarding the starting lineup, we will prioritize what is best for our program. We have a week to determine the most suitable players for this game, and we will evaluate that in the coming days."
Freeman also mentioned that running back Jeremiyah Love, who has been managing a right knee injury, is anticipated to be fully available for the game against Ohio State. In contrast, wide receiver Beaux Collins continues to recover from a calf strain that limited his participation in the Penn State game. Collins ranks second on the team with 37 receptions for 458 yards, three touchdowns, and an average of 30.5 yards per game. "J-Love is ready to go," Freeman remarked regarding his leading rusher. "Beaux is still in recovery. He will gradually reintegrate into practice over the next few days, and I am hopeful that, provided he continues to improve, he will be prepared for the game. However, we must ensure his progress throughout this week."
