Paris Johnson Jr. emerging as Cardinals’ leadership anchor as culture-first approach takes hold.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. is increasingly viewed as one of the foundational voices in the team’s evolving locker room culture — a role that has developed naturally rather than through formal designation. Although Johnson did not wear a captain’s “C” during the 2025 season, his influence inside the building suggested he was already operating as a leader. Now entering his third NFL year, that trajectory is becoming even more defined as teammates and coaches continue to point to his presence as central to the team’s identity. “I feel like me being able to take the next step has already been happening,” Johnson said in an interview with Arizona Sports’ Cardinals Corner. “Leadership starts off the field first. People always talk about leadership on the field, but the real foundation is built in how you connect outside the building.” Johnson emphasized that building trust during OTAs and informal team interactions is what ultimately strengthens accountability once players take the field. “When you build that connection off the field, it’s like a college locker room,” he said. “That accountability hits different because you can talk to each other honestly, and it comes from a place of respect.” That mindset has been evident since the end of last season, with Johnson making a point to remain active in the locker room environment and available to younger teammates as they transition into the organization.

That approach has extended across multiple draft classes. Johnson has played an informal but consistent role in welcoming incoming talent, including recent first-round additions such as Marvin Harrison Jr., Darius Robinson, Walter Nolen III, and most recently 2026 first-round pick Jeremiyah Love. The gesture of showing up for rookies — often before they even officially settle into team life — has become part of what Johnson describes as a culture built on continuity and connection. The tradition, he noted, was originally modeled after veteran leadership he experienced early in his own career, particularly from former Cardinals lineman D.J. Humphries, who was among the first to personally welcome him when he arrived in Arizona in 2023. For newcomers like Love, that presence has already made an impression. “They took the time out of their day to come see me, and that means a lot,” Love said. “That shows there’s a brotherhood here. I just want to build on that and get to know everybody as people, not just teammates.” As the Cardinals continue reshaping their roster under general manager Monti Ossenfort and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, Johnson’s off-field approach is increasingly viewed internally as a key stabilizing force — one that aligns with the team’s broader emphasis on culture and connection. While leadership roles in the locker room may still be formally defined, Johnson’s influence, by most accounts, is already firmly established.
