Momentum continues to build around a potential early-season return for Patrick Mahomes, as the Kansas City Chiefs signal that their star quarterback is tracking ahead of schedule in his recovery from a late-season knee injury. Brett Veach said the 2025 NFL MVP has made significant strides following ACL and LCL surgery, noting that Mahomes has remained deeply engaged in his rehabilitation process. According to Veach, the quarterback is “way ahead of schedule” and has been a constant presence at team facilities throughout the offseason. “He’s in our building every day,” Veach said, adding that Mahomes even brings a team trainer with him when away from Kansas City to continue his recovery program. Head coach Andy Reid also offered an optimistic update during rookie minicamp, suggesting Mahomes could participate in a limited capacity during organized team activities (OTAs). However, the team is expected to manage his workload carefully as he ramps up toward full football activity. Signs of progress have already been visible. In March—roughly three months after surgery—Mahomes shared footage of himself throwing during indoor drills while wearing a brace on his left leg, marking his first public indication of on-field movement since the injury. Despite the setback, Mahomes has remained consistent about his goal of being ready for Week 1 of the upcoming season. “I want to be ready for Week 1,” he said earlier this year. “That’s my goal—to play without restrictions.” The injury occurred on December 14, when Mahomes suffered tears to his ACL and LCL in a late-season matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. His recovery timeline remains within the standard 9–12 month window for return to play, but the Chiefs continue to balance optimism with caution as training camp approaches.
