CHICAGO — Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball captured the 2026 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournamentchampionship with an 80 - 72 win over the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball on Sunday at United Center, completing a four wins in four days run that reshaped Purdue’s postseason outlook.
Oscar Cluff scored 21 points and Trey Kaufman-Renn added 20 as Purdue secured its third Big Ten Tournament title and first since 2023. The Boilermakers entered the conference tournament after losing four of their final six regular season games but delivered one of their strongest defensive stretches of the season during the four game run.
Coach Matt Painter credited that defensive improvement as the decisive factor in the championship performance.
Braden Smith finished with 14 points, 11 assists, and three steals for Purdue, which improved to 27 - 8 overall. The senior point guard orchestrated the offense in the second half and continued to move closer to an NCAA milestone. Smith now has 1,075 career assists and sits one shy of the Division I record held by Bobby Hurley.
Fletcher Loyer contributed 14 points and 3 three point baskets as Purdue limited Michigan to 34 second half points after a competitive first half.
The Boilermakers took control midway through the second half behind a consistent pick and roll sequence between Smith and Kaufman Renn. Two jump shots from Kaufman Renn off Smith passes extended Purdue’s lead to 55 - 44 with 12:55 remaining.
Shortly afterward, Smith drove inside against 7 foot 3 center Aday Mara, absorbed contact, and converted the basket while drawing a foul to push Purdue’s lead to 58 - 46 with 12:06 left. Purdue shot 15 of 26 in the second half and made nine of its first eleven attempts after the break.
Michigan entered the game as the No. 3 ranked team in the nation and the tournament’s top seed. Yaxel Lendeborg led the Wolverines with 20 points while Mara added 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots. Elliot Cadeaufinished with 10 points and 10 assists, and Nimari Burnett added 12 points while playing in his hometown.
The first half featured 11 lead changes before Purdue closed on a 12 - 2 run to take a 38 - 34 lead late in the period. Michigan responded in the final seconds when Cadeau found Mara for an alley oop dunk before scoring a tying layup just before halftime.
The latest tournament result also clarified the NCAA Tournament timeline. Purdue received a No. 2 seed in the West Region and will open March Madness against Queens Royals men's basketball on Friday. Purdue has now earned a top four seed in nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, reflecting the program’s consistent national presence under Painter.
Michigan’s outlook remains strong despite the loss. The Wolverines were awarded a No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region and will play Thursday against the winner of the First Four matchup between UMBC Retrievers men's basketball and Howard Bison men's basketball.
With the NCAA Tournament bracket now set, both programs shift their focus to the national championship race. Purdue arrives with renewed momentum after its conference tournament run, while Michigan remains positioned as one of the top seeds in the field as March Madness begins.
