Qatar Earn Historic World Cup Point After Dramatic Late Equalizer Against Switzerland.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Qatar earned the first World Cup point in the nation's history after a dramatic late equalizer secured a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B opener at Levi's Stadium on Saturday. The 2022 World Cup hosts appeared headed toward another heartbreaking defeat on football's biggest stage after Switzerland took an early lead through Breel Embolo's first-half penalty. However, Qatar's persistence paid off in the closing moments as a late attack resulted in an equalizer that sparked jubilant celebrations among players and supporters alike. Switzerland controlled much of the first half and broke through in the 13th minute when Embolo converted from the penalty spot. The opportunity came after Remo Freuler was brought down inside the box by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada following a contested aerial challenge. After a lengthy VAR review and medical treatment delay, Embolo calmly sent his shot into the net to give the Swiss a 1-0 advantage.

Qatar had opportunities of their own before and after the breakthrough. Edmílson Junior nearly stunned Switzerland early after capitalizing on a defensive mistake, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stood firm. Abunada also kept Qatar in the match with several important saves, denying Rubén Vargas and helping prevent Switzerland from extending its lead. The Swiss continued to create chances throughout the second half, with Granit Xhaka, Embolo, and substitute Johan Manzambi all threatening the Qatar goal. Despite controlling possession and generating scoring opportunities, Switzerland failed to find the second goal that would have secured all three points. That missed opportunity proved costly.

As the match entered its final minutes, Qatar pushed forward in search of an equalizer. A dangerous delivery from the left flank found captain Boualem Khoukhi at the back post, and his powerful header found the corner of the net. FIFA later credited the goal as an own goal by Swiss defender Miro Muheim, but the moment belonged to Qatar as players rushed to celebrate a historic result. The draw marks a significant milestone for Qatar, who had never previously earned a point at a FIFA World Cup. Under manager Julen Lopetegui, the Gulf nation showed resilience and determination to battle back against a traditionally strong Swiss side. For Switzerland, the result will feel like two points dropped after leading for most of the match and failing to capitalize on several clear scoring chances. Meanwhile, Qatar leaves its opening fixture with renewed confidence and a place in the history books after securing its first-ever World Cup finals point.
