The 2026 college football transfer portal is expected to be one of the most competitive in recent history, especially for quarterbacks. With the NCAA transfer window opening from January 2 to January 16, thousands of players across the FBS and FCS will have the opportunity to change programs. Quarterbacks, in particular, are drawing intense interest as teams search for experienced leaders to fill the most important position on the field.

In recent years, the financial value of transfer quarterbacks has increased significantly. According to industry sources, elite quarterbacks entering the portal in 2026 are expected to command between $3 and $5 million in NIL compensation. Because the spring transfer window has been eliminated, programs now have only one opportunity to secure a starting quarterback, making this portal cycle especially high stakes.

Among the most sought-after players is Brendan Sorsby of Cincinnati. A productive dual-threat quarterback, Sorsby has posted impressive passing and rushing numbers over two seasons and earned All-Big 12 recognition. With strong interest from major programs and positive NFL draft feedback, he faces a pivotal decision between transferring and turning professional.

Another notable name is Sam Leavitt from Arizona State. After a standout freshman campaign, Leavitt’s sophomore season was limited by injury. Despite this setback, his past performance and remaining eligibility make him a strong candidate for Power Four programs seeking long-term upside.

Drew Mestemaker of North Texas emerged as one of the season’s biggest surprises. Once a walk-on, he developed into the nation’s leading passer in a high-powered offense. His rapid rise has attracted attention from larger programs, though his future may depend on whether he stays with his current coaching staff.

Several proven veterans are also expected to draw interest. Josh Hoover (TCU) and Rocco Becht (Iowa State) bring extensive starting experience and leadership. While both quarterbacks have shown consistency, teams will weigh their upside against issues such as turnovers and injuries.

Former highly touted recruits like Dylan Raiola (Nebraska) and DJ Lagway (Florida) are also exploring fresh starts. Each has faced challenges in their current situations, but their talent and recruiting pedigree make them appealing options for programs hoping to unlock their potential. Beyond the Power Four, standout performers from Group of Five and FCS programs are gaining attention.

Players such as Jaden Craig (Harvard) and Colton Joseph (Old Dominion) have produced elite statistics and could successfully transition to higher levels of competition.

Finally, several backups with limited starting experience, including Kenny Minchey (Notre Dame) and Ethan Grunkemeyer (Penn State), may enter the portal seeking opportunities to become full-time starters.

Overall, the 2026 quarterback transfer market reflects the growing importance of experience, system fit, and NIL resources in college football. With only one portal window and rising financial expectations, programs and players alike face critical decisions that could shape the upcoming season.
