In front of a packed Coors Field on Friday night, the Colorado Rockies finally gave their fans something to cheer about. Ryan McMahon’s clutch two-run double in the fifth inning was the difference-maker as the Rockies edged the American League East-leading New York Yankees 3–2. The win snapped a five-game losing streak and gave rookie pitcher Tanner Gordon his first Major League win. Colorado may still have the worst record in baseball at 9–42, but this game showed they can hang with the league's best—at least for one night. Despite their struggles this season, the Rockies showed heart, especially with Gordon on the mound. The 27-year-old right-hander delivered six solid innings, allowing just two runs on five hits. McMahon's double came at a key moment. After Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt allowed back-to-back two-out singles in the fifth, reliever Tim Hill entered the game and promptly gave up the towering shot off McMahon’s bat. The ball nearly left the park, but instead slammed off the top of the centerfield wall, scoring both runners and giving the Rockies a 3–2 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. On the Yankees’ side, Aaron Judge stayed hot. He crushed his 17th home run of the season in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-4, raising his batting average to an incredible .398. But his night took a turn when he grounded into a double play in the eighth inning, snuffing out a late rally. The Yankees, who had won six of their last seven coming into the game, went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The Rockies' bullpen deserves a lot of credit. Jake Bird pitched a perfect seventh, Seth Halvorsen escaped the eighth by getting Judge and Ben Rice out in key spots, and Zach Agnos handled the ninth for his third save.
There were other fun moments at the ballpark, too—Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix threw out the ceremonial first pitch to loud cheers, and the Rockies wore their bright City Connect uniforms. They’re now 2–2 when wearing them, which might not sound like much, but for this team, it counts. While one win doesn’t erase the season’s struggles, this game gave Rockies fans a reason to smile. With young players contributing and the team finally pulling through in a close game, maybe there’s a little momentum to build on.
