Sabrina Ionescu has become one of the most recognizable stars in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and her future with the New York Liberty appears promising despite uncertainty surrounding the league. In an interview with Bleacher Report, Ionescu addressed her upcoming free agency, the league’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations, and the continued growth of women’s basketball. Although Ionescu will be eligible for free agency before the 2026 season, she expressed a strong desire to remain with the New York Liberty. The guard explained that staying with the team that drafted her has always been her goal. She noted that representing New York as a franchise player has been meaningful throughout her career, suggesting she does not expect to be heavily involved in exploring other teams during free agency. Since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu has consistently performed at an elite level. During her six seasons in the league, she has earned four All-Star selections and four All-WNBA honors. She also played a major role in helping the Liberty capture the 2024 WNBA championship, further strengthening her legacy with the franchise. Last season, she averaged 18.2 points, 5.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game.

Despite the positive outlook regarding her future with the team, the league currently faces uncertainty due to ongoing CBA negotiations between the WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association. Ionescu explained that this is her first experience witnessing a full round of negotiations since the previous agreement was finalized before she entered the league in 2020. She emphasized that players now have an opportunity to advocate for improvements that will benefit future generations of athletes. While discussions may take time, she believes an agreement will eventually be reached. Meanwhile, basketball activities have continued through the offseason with the second season of the three-on-three league Unrivaled. Ionescu participated during the league’s first season but did not play in the second due to recovering from an injury sustained during the WNBA season. Instead, she spent time rehabbing and even appeared on broadcasts as an analyst. According to Ionescu, the recovery period allowed her to focus on her health and return to full strength before the upcoming season. The Unrivaled league has continued to expand, adding teams and hosting events outside of its home base in Miami. One of its highlights included a game in Philadelphia that attracted more than 21,000 fans, setting a regular-season attendance record for women’s professional basketball at the venue. Ionescu said she believed in the league’s concept from the beginning, noting that it provides players with financial opportunities and ownership equity while helping promote the sport. Outside of basketball, Ionescu has also been involved in projects that support young athletes. She recently partnered with Abbott and Real Madrid to promote the Abbott Dream Team initiative. The program will hold tryouts in several U.S. cities and select 16 teenage soccer players to travel to Madrid to train with coaches from the historic Spanish club. Participants will also receive guidance on health and nutrition from Abbott specialists. Ionescu, who played soccer as a child and is an investor in Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, said the program reflects her commitment to supporting youth development in sports.

In addition to her professional success, Ionescu is also an Olympic gold medalist. She was part of the United States women’s basketball team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Looking ahead, she hopes to represent the country again during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Playing in front of American fans would make the experience especially meaningful, and she said preparation for that opportunity begins years in advance. Overall, Ionescu continues to influence the growth of women’s sports both on and off the court. Whether through her leadership with the New York Liberty, involvement in player advocacy during CBA negotiations, or participation in initiatives supporting young athletes, she remains a key figure in shaping the future of the WNBA and women’s athletics.
